One of four in a beautiful plaque quartet highlighting the story of Miss Mary Wellesley, Great-great Granddaughter of the Duke of Wellington, a lady who had a bold vision for the future. Through the sheer love and understanding of trees she was the harbinger of a resilient woodland, known as Hockeridge and Pancake Woods, that not only looked beautiful, with colourful and architectural avenues of trees, but supported wildlife, combated disease and the challenges associated with our changing climate.
Like, many of the majestic trees at Hockeridge and Pancake Woods, striking pheasants hide their exotic origins and blend seamlessly into our quintessential picture of the English countryside. The woods are home to nearly 60 species of trees, 23 of which are native to the UK. The remainder have been sourced from overseas, chosen for their timber quality, health, beauty or novelty. These trees have been carefully incorporated and seamlessly blended into this woodland in the heart of the Chilterns. They include hardwoods like the Buckingham’s traditional beech as well as oak and cherry. Conifer plantations include Scots pine, Norway spruce, European larch and western hemlock are there too. In this plaque, a lone pheasant proudly steps out from behind a hardwood trunk, his cinnamon and chestnut body with dark green head and red face wattling so strikingly against the pale ferns. Above, a Bullfinch flutters with wings outstretched to showcase his unmistakable, bright pinkish-red breast and cheeks, as his black cap and tail salute the amber dawn.
