With the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) fortuitous guardians of this truly exceptional woodland, Kerry Goodwin was able to help the charity bring Hockeridge and Pancake Woods to life under glaze as badgers, rabbits and foxes scuttle around amidst pheasants and fungi. Above, a colourful tapestry of birds claim sanctuary in the upper branches – Bullfinches flash their pinkish-scarlet breasts and Greenfinches dazzle in apple green. Under the tree canopy many indicative species of ancient woodland make up the understorey and Kerry uses tubular, deep-purple foxgloves, frequented by long tongued bees during the summer months in the Hockeridge and Pancake Woods.
Look carefully, and you will spy a hare, holly blue or dragonfly. Without a doubt, this design would be a challenge for Moorcroft artistry, a challenge that, with the help of the RFS and colour trials, Moorcroft was able discharge with the same honour that the RFS has continued to manage the woods - a high standard as a lasting legacy for Miss Wellesley and her bold vision for the future.
