As the oldest forestry and arboriculture organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the RFS Certification represents a well-respected standard of professional competence.
Professional designation
Certified professionals can use a designated post-nominal, such as “Cert. Arb.” or “Cert. For.”, which clearly demonstrates your professional status.

The RFS maintains a comprehensive record of certification holders, allowing potential employers or clients to verify professional credentials easily.
RFS membership
Successful certification includes a year’s membership to the RFS, providing access to a knowledgeable and respected professional network, events and resources such as the Quarterly Journal of Forestry and the bimonthly e-newsletter.
Affordable
Priced at just £100 per application or £145 if applying for both Forestry and Arboriculture Certifications, the RFS has always aimed to keep the cost of its Certifications at an affordable level.
Application Requirements
Certification is designed to ensure professional competence:
- A theory qualification in Forestry or Arboriculture at Level 2 or above
- 8 or more NPTC or Lantra certificates
- An up-to-date First Aid qualification

From January 2025, there are some key changes to be aware that chainsaw-related certifications must be current (gained in the previous 5 years.
Continuing Professional Development
The RFS Certification is not just about a one-time achievement but about maintaining and demonstrating ongoing professional standards in forestry and arboriculture. For this reason, Certifications will be valid for 5 years, after which reapplication is necessary.
