Prestigious RFS James Cup presented to Dr Daniel Alder
Dr Daniel Alder was presented the 2024 James Cup today by former RFS President, Sir James Scott.

We are delighted to share that the 2024 James Cup has been awarded to Dr Daniel Alder for his paper, ‘Implications of irregular silviculture for woodland birds, bats and plants in broadleaved woodland’.
Following the announcement in the April 2025 issue of QJF, the award was presented to Dr Alder today by former RFS President Sir James Scott.
Judges commented that “this marvellous project is both timely and informative” and that the article outlines “important work on the value of irregularity for biodiversity”. The article, which appeared in the April 2024 issue of the Quarterly Journal of Forestry (QJF, 118(2): 86-94), was praised for the high quality of research, clear and accessible writing, great use of data and the highly relevant and important topic.
On receiving the good news Dr Alder commented “It’s a real privilege to be awarded the RFS James Cup and a testament to the efforts of all those people who helped bring about our research into the effects of irregular silviculture on biodiversity within ancient woodland. I’m very grateful to the RFS for being given the opportunity to share the results of our study in the journal, which has received positive feedback and interest from foresters and conservationists alike.”
In joint second place were ‘Common Ground? Experience of Sharing Private Woodland with a Wider Public’ by Peter Bramleby (QJF, 118(4): 238-244) and ‘The Benefits and Challenges of Bringing Woodlands into Management in the National Forest’ by Ed Hiorns (QJF, 118(2): 110-117).
The James Cup is awarded each year to the author or authors of an article that in the opinion of a panel of judges drawn from the RFS membership, was the best to appear in the journal in the preceding year. RFS members can re-read every QJF article dating back to 1986 by visiting rfs.org.uk and following the Insights & Publications link.
