 A 7-night trip to Slovenia, one of the most forested countries in Europe, to learn about all aspects of Slovenian forestry and silvicultural practice.

 A 7-night trip to Slovenia, one of the most forested countries in Europe, to learn about all aspects of Slovenian forestry and silvicultural practice. There will also be opportunities for sight-seeing and cultural exchange. The daily excursions will be by coach with journey times ranging from 1 to 2 hours each way. The visits will involve a good amount of walking, mostly on established tracks. Please note, there is no option to have support vehicles to aid members on this tour.

Day 1

Sunday 23

ARRIVE LJUBLJANA Stay at the Hotel Ribno Alpine Resort (www.hotel-ribno.si), near Bled – known for its picturesque lake.
Day 2

Monday 24

MAŠUN/SNEŽNIK Mašun is an old forest settlement in the heart of the vast Snežnik forests. We will explore the ‘close-to-nature’ forest management that began in Europe near Snežnik in the 15th Century. We will also hear how forests in Slovenia are managed today and enjoy views of the impressive forests at Mašun. Evening welcome dinner.
Day 3

Tuesday 25

TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK The National Park is renowned for its verdant valleys, deep blue lakes and soaring peaks. Our trip will take us to the north eastern corner of the park to see the beautiful mountains of the Julian Alps whilst driving to Kranjska Gora. The Forestry Service and local Forestry Officers will explain how forestry is managed on the steep slopes and in the deep glacial valleys.
Day 4

Wednesday 26

SOLCAVA/MATKOV KOT The beautiful Matkov Kot valley in the southern European Alps. We will visit one of the largest private farms in Slovenia in the Kamnik Alps and walk up a spectacular valley whilst discussing forestry in the region with the owner and local forest adviser.  We will end the day with a visit to a typical Slovenian sawmill.
Day 5

Thursday 27

POKLJUKA This alpine plateau is located in the Triglav National Park. We will experience a vast spruce forest with a knowledgeable local forester and learn about forestry on high plateaus. The walk will take us through the forest and out onto the Planina (pasture) with its impressive flora and views. The day will conclude with a cable car ride up Vogel Mountain for spectacular views of the range and lake and the distant Adriatic Sea.

Friday 28

KRAKOVSKI GOZD A large area of alluvial forest by the Kika River on the Croatian border. A leading forester will talk about the large oak forests on heavy wet flatlands and the extensive beech forests on the drier slopes.
Day 7

Saturday 29

LJUBLJANA A short guided tour of the city of Ljubljana, boat ride on the river Ljubljanica, then free time to explore the city.
Day 8

Sunday 30

DEPARTURE From Ljubljana’s Airport.

Accessibility

The daily excursions will be by coach with journey times ranging from 1 to 2 hours each way. There will be lots of walking mostly on established tracks, please note we will not have a support vehicle to aid members on this tour.

Price

  • Single occupancy rate: £1780.00 per person.
  • Double occupancy rate: £1460.00 per person.

This study tour includes:

  • 6 nights accommodation half board (with breakfast and dinner).
  • 1 night accommodation bed and breakfast.
  • Daily lunches, tea/coffee refreshments and coach transport.
  • Tourist tax, porterage, entrance fees, wine tasting (Fri 28th) tour guides and tour booklet.

Not included:

  • Flights and transfers to and from the airport.
  • Lunch and boat ride Ljubljana (Sat 29th).

Eligibility

All delegates including partners must be RFS or RSFS members at time of application.

There will be a limited number of tickets available on a first come basis. Reservations can be made by calling 01295 678588 from midday on WEDNESDAY 15th NOVEMBER 2023. We will ask for a non-refundable deposit of £250.00 per person, with balance due by 31 March 2024.

Price is based on quotes obtained by the travel partner and currency rate at time of going to print. We reserve the right to amend the price due to changes in exchange rates or other circumstances beyond our control.
