Design an Eco-Kiln: Schools Competition Opens
Calling all schools in and around Kent! Can your pupils take up the challenge to design an eco-kiln to dry wood?
Winners will see their design built and operated in a local woodland – and win £200 for their school.
School teams should be no more than seven strong and designs must be submitted by 25 November. Details of how to take part can be found here.
The competition is part of a new three-year programme of funding for Kent being delivered by the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) to ignite young people’s interest in woodlands. Eco kilns will help woodland owners produce dry and sustainable firewood which meets the very latest in low emission requirements.
RFS Project Officer Philip Mearns says: “We hope this project will help will fire the imagination of young people interested in design and the environment as we all look to create a better future using local and sustainable materials.”
Philip is also developing a network of woodland owners/managers and other key stakeholders to explore the local wood fuel market and investigate economic and sustainable designs for wood fuel drying.
