Special links: our Jubilee Tree of Trees
One of the 350 saplings which made up the Platinum Jubilee Tree of Trees has been planted in our Hockeridge Wood to mark Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II’s reign.
This very special hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) was planted by President Ben Herbert with our first director Esmond Harris and with help from our Board members and others.
Earlier this year Hockeridge was among 70 woodlands chosen as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy network of Ancient Woodlands.
Planting the trees, President Ben Herbert said: “This sapling has already been admired by many millions as part of the spectacular 69ft Tree of Trees sculpture outside Buckingham Palace, lit up to mark the Platinum Jubilee. It had been one of a number of small trees in aluminium pots “sprouting” from timber-plank branches.
“We were immensely honoured to be one of the first charities to receive a sapling from the Tree of Trees. It now starts a new chapter in Hockeridge helping form a special link from the present to the past. Ancient hornbeam coppice hedgerows are a feature here in Hockeridge and Pancake Woods and other woodland around the Chilterns in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
“Her Majesty was our much admired patron of the Royal Forestry Society for half of the 140 years that this organisation has existed. We all look forward to seeing this sapling achieve its own Platinum Jubilee as a lasting mark of our gratitude for all she achieved over her reign.”
