North Wales Division Student Awards 2023
Congratulations to John Hughes from Bangor University; Jacob Goodwin from Coleg Cambria (Llysfasi): and Tomos Jones from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor (Glynllifon.)
Bangor Bursary: John Hughes
John’s dissertation project questioned “Should animal grazing be regulated as part of the strategy to restore a forested landscape in the Snowdonia National Park?”
He carried out a re-analysis of long-term grazing exclusion plots, compared with areas grazed by livestock. His project suggests that simply removing grazing is unlikely to lead to recolonisation of woodland in the national park without supplementary planting to provide a future seed source.
Best Student Award, Coleg Cambria (Llysfasi): Jacob Goodwin
Jacob first started at Coleg Llysfasi on a Level 1 course in landbased studies. He went on to a Level 2 course in agricultural machinery. The following year, 2021, he enrolled on the Tilhill Level 3 Extended Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture, which he has just completed with a merit grade. He has also achieved a number of practical qualifications.
Jacob was nominated for his commitment to improving his future prospects, and his perseverance in achieving what he set out to do.
RFS Shield and Best Overall Student, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor (Glynllifon): Tomos Jones

Tomos was nominated for his hard work, motivation and enthusiasm whilst studying the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Forestry & Arboriculture. He is among he first group to finish this new qualification at the college.
Tomos completed four weeks work experience with Gwalch countryside services where he carried out vegetation management and the feedback from the employer was excellent.
