North Wales Awards go to three incredible students
Three incredible forestry students have been presented with awards by our North Wales Division:
- Daisy Bell, Best Student Award, Coleg Merion-Dwyfor (Glynllifon)
- James Hughes, Best Student Award, Coleg Cambria (Llysfasi)
- Karen Batten, for the best dissertation by a final year forestry student, Bangor University
The awards were presented at a Covid-secure meeting in North Wales by Divisional Chairman John Roe.
Daisy was awarded her prize for her hard work and motivation whilst studying her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Countryside Management at Coleg Merion-Dwyfor. In September she starts studying wildlife conservation at Bangor University.
James Hughes is one of the first group to complete a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture at Coleg Cambria. He moved to Wales for the course as he wanted to find a way into forestry as a change in career. He has just secured a post as a tree surveyor with Denbighshire County Council.
Karen Batten’s dissertation at Bangor University focussed on the early growth of Scots pine on a restock site in Cornwall. Her study highlights how the effects of soil pH should be considered when managing sites to optimise the early growth of Scots pine. Karen has since started work with Fountains Forestry in the south of England.
