Lawrie had started at the Powis Castle Estate in 1990, aged 16, as a Youth Training Scheme apprentice. As Head Forester, he now manages the commercial forestry and also looks after the Estate’s direct sale firwood business and the in-hand deer park.

When he attended the Royal Welsh show this year, he did not know he was going to receive the award.

The surprise presentation by RFS President Ben Herbert was made in front of Lawrie’s wife, daughter and other members of staff from the Powis Estate.
