Congratulations to Hugh Cresswell, who was presented with the Forestry Roots Rising Star Award at Chatsworth House on 31 July.

Hugh is partway through his traineeship at Chatsworth and has made a fantastic impression. Not only has Hugh jumped into his role with passion and enthusiasm, but he has also managed to pursue a master’s degree in forestry during his time outside of work.

Chris Froggatt at Chatsworth has been working with Hugh for the last year. Chris commented:

“It has been a great pleasure to work with Hugh over the last 10 months and watch him develop his skill set within the industry. He has gone from complete novice with a chainsaw to competent cutter and has honed these skills in some of the most challenging conditions and locations, most notably on the steep limestone slopes of Monsal Dale, felling diseased ash for the Life in the Ravines project.

“More remarkable still is that after a gruelling day working on the hill, he has found the energy to do his master’s degree in forestry when he returned home from work! He has managed all this whilst still maintaining a great attitude and being able to have fun with the team.

“Aside from cutting he’s actively sort out experience in the many areas we cover here at Chatsworth Forestry and Arboriculture and has gained experience in firewood processing and delivering, carrying out timber stocks, worked roadside jobs helping out with dangerous tree removals, re-planting our clear fell sites, tree safety surveys and he was even able to sit in on our FSC audit.

“As you can see, Hugh has really made the most of his time with us and I can honestly say he will be missed when his time with us comes to an end. I look forward to seeing how his career progresses as I feel an exciting future lies in store!”
