Conservation Trainee
Who can apply?
We’re looking for someone who:
- Loves working outdoors
- has some practical skills and experience.
- isn’t currently employed in Forestry.
- has a full driving licence.
- Is aged 18 – 30
Main role
You will be joining the Conservation Team at Sherwood Forest Trust, working on tree planting, growing trees, woodland management and heathland restoration, helping to protect Sherwood Forest for future generations.
Your Experience
During your year with us you will be:
- planting trees to create new areas of woodland within Sherwood Forest.
- felling trees as part of the management of our heathland.
- working to remove invasive species and restore native habitats.
- involved in general countryside management, including fencing, gates, hedge laying and planting.
- helping to establish our community tree nursery by collecting seeds and growing trees.
About you
You will have
Essential
- Resilience working outdoors all year round and in poor weather conditions.
- The ability to work as part of a team, but also the self-motivation to progress suitable tasks without direct supervision.
- A desire to take the first step in a career in forestry and woodland management.
Desirable
- An accredited chainsaw certificate covering maintenance, cross-cutting and felling small trees
- A Level 2 certificate in a land management related subject
- Competency identifying native broadleaf species and common woodland flora
Benefits
Holidays: 20 days per annum plus bank holidays although where bank holidays are worked the equivalent time off in lieu may be taken by prior agreement
Term: 1 year fixed term contract with a one month probationary period
Support:
Up to 20 days paid release to attend fully funded CPD training
Regular progress reviews with the RFS and employer.
There is access to a £300 relocation grant available upon request from RFS.
The position is subject to satisfactory references, evidence of the right to work and live in the UK, other pre-employment checks as required and a contract of employment.
No housing or subsistence allowance is included.
