Penfold’s Woodland Management & Contracting Ltd is an established forestry company based in Southeast England. With a focus on providing quality woodland management within the region we also undertake survey works across the country.

To support the company’s growth, we are looking for an experienced surveyor or candidate with transferable skills from within the land management sector to work alongside our exceptional management team. Formal qualifications in the field would be desirable and would a good understanding of woodland practice, species and habitat identification.

Although we are based in Hampshire we work predominately across southern England with occasional contracts in Wales and Northern England.

The desirable candidate needs to be self-motivated and capable of working independently and as part of a team, a willingness to work away from home is essential.

About the Role

We are looking for forester/ecologist with an interest in woodland surveying.  The role will be principally focused on delivering our survey contract commitments for the National Woodland Inventory that will be supplemented with other survey work.  In time and subject to ability, performance and company work demand the successful candidate will support the delivery of woodland management to our clients that offers full support to their forestry and woodland management.

Key Responsibilities

  • To organise and deliver woodland surveys including production, attribute, National Forest Inventory, tree safety surveys.  woodland mapping as required by Penfolds Woodland Management and their clients.
  • To plan and undertake site inspections/surveys of client’s trees/woodlands identifying silvicultural & maintenance needs with a view to developing a planned and costed programme of works.
  • To organise and deliver pre harvesting checks including European Protected Species (EPS) inspections, and deer/squirrel impact assessments.
  • To undertake woodland inventory to support felling licences and woodland plans.
  • Update and maintain management data & files ensuring accurate information is maintained for use. Contribute towards service improvements in the way in which data is held and instigating efficiencies where identifiable.
  • To assist in the creation of woodland management plans, tree health grants new planting schemes as required.
  • To advocate the proactive management of existing woodland and expansion of new woodland on behalf of the company.
  • Degree or Higher Diploma in forestry, or related land or environmental management qualification.
  • Technical knowledge of UK Forestry Standard, forestry management & silvicultural practices, operations, grants, licencing, and site supervisory requirements.
  • Understanding of woodland habitats & ecology and associated protective instruments.
  • Understanding of woodland/tree abiotic pests and diseases, including deer and squirrel control and the management thereof.
  • Ability to carry out woodland inspections and use of associated measuring tools (heights, diameters, basal measurements) and equipment.
  • Awareness of climate change adaptation methods and forest resilience practices
  • To be well organised, to be able to prioritise, and to manage a varied workload and
  • Ability to proactively deal with complex and sometimes contentious issues relating to people and woodland interests.
  • Good stakeholder communication.
  • Numerate & articulate.
  • A good working knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues associated with the post.
  • Hold or be prepared to become chartered within the Institute of Chartered Foresters.

Experience Required


  • A sound knowledge of woodland operations and practices
  • Competent in tree identification of all common woodland species.
  • Be able to identify woodland priority habitats; including principal ground flora species.
  • Be competent in the use of IT including GIS and Microsoft office.
  • Have an understanding of woodland mensuration practices and procedures.
  • Accurate with an attention to detail who takes pride in their work.


  • Competent in the use of mensuration equipment including Haglof Vertex and navigation using GPS devises.
  • Have a sound knowledge of mensuration procedures including individual tree measurements, plot sampling and tariffing.


£28,500-£32,500 per annum depending on experience
