The Opportunity:

A rare and advantageous position for an experienced, seasoned Head Forester to make a lasting impact on a large historic and prestigious estate.

We seek a highly experienced and professional Head Forester to lead woodland operations on a distinguished family-owned estate in the South West of England. The estate features a unique mix of well-maintained ancient and newly established woodlands and is part of one of the UK’s most historic and diverse rural enterprises.  You will manage a skilled forestry team and oversee contractors, applying your expertise in silviculture and conservation to enhance the long-term health, productivity, and biodiversity of the estate’s forests. Working closely with the Estate Owner, Land Agent, and wider estate team, you will shape woodland strategy while ensuring the estate’s historic charm and natural beauty are preserved. Role Responsibilities

To oversee the management and conservation of the estate’s ancient and semi-natural woodlands, including coppicing cycles and long-term planting regimes
To plan and supervise daily forestry activities and contractors, including felling, vermin control, maintenance, and preparation for seasonal estate operations
To manage, train, and support a skilled team, ensuring safe working practices, strong morale, and high operational standards
To work closely with the estate owner and land agent on strategic planning, grant applications, and income reporting
To collaborate with the wider estate team and contribute to estate events such as the annual gardens open day

Essential Skills

Strong understanding of forestry practices, silviculture, and woodland management
Proven staff management with excellent leadership skills
Experienced in the use of forestry equipment and machinery
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across all levels
A problem solver, able to resolve situations with positive outcomes
Good knowledge and respect for health and safety regulations
Able to work independently and as part of a team
Motivated and driven with a passion for the forestry sector
UK driving license
