The Tree of Knowledge Webinar: Exploring how tree species and genetic diversity and epigenetic effects can increase forest resilience.

Diversification is often promoted as a mechanism to increase forest resilience to climate change and pest and pathogens. However, diversity can occur at different scales: tree species diversity, within tree species genetic diversity and then epigenetic effects (changes in the expression of genes due to a stress, which may be thought of simply as the tree memory). This webinar, presented by the Tree of Knowledge project, will explore how tree species diversity, within tree species genetic diversity and epigenetic effects can increase forest resilience and in particular the synergies and trade-offs between these different types of diversity. It will end with a discussion around how these different types of diversity and their synergies can be implemented in practice.
The webinar is run by the Tree of Knowledge project, a collaborative project between the James Hutton Institute (Dr Stuart Smith and Dr Ruth Mitchell), The University of Birmingham (Dr Estrella Luna-Diez), UKCEH (Dr Stephen Cavers) and Forest Research (Dr Victoria Stokes, Dr David Edwards). The project brings together three Future of UK Treescapes projects: DiversiTree, MEMBRA and newLEAF.
