Managing Woods for Wildlife
Tutor: Mark Vallance, Senior Land Manager for Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust - this course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to improve a woodland for wildlife, focusing on management practices which enhance biodiversity and promote the long-term health of woodland ecosystems.



This course will provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to improve a woodland for wildlife, focusing on management practices which enhance biodiversity and promote the long-term health of woodland ecosystems.
This course will enable delegates to:
- Gain understanding of the importance of woodland biodiversity and the principles of practical management, where wildlife benefit is the primary objective.
- Gain understanding of the principles of biological surveying and monitoring, and identifying species and habitat requirements.
- Learn how to create and enhance woodland habitats to support and promote opportunities for range of wildlife species.
- Learn about woodland management techniques, such as coppicing, thinning etc. and their benefits for wildlife.
- Gain understanding of the principles of pest and disease management and invasive species control.
Places are limited to a maximum of 12 delegates to ensure that everyone can contribute and have their individual questions answered. Hot drinks will be included but lunch is not, so please bring a packed lunches.

Mark Vallance
Senior Land Manager - Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust
Mark comes from a farming family and grew up on a farm in North Bucks, he has always been interested in nature and the natural world around. He is now a Senior Land Manager for the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust, where he has worked since 2005.
Mark has specialist knowledge on the practical management of woodland for wildlife, and he is responsible for managing nature reserves, including many important woodland sites, across Buckinghamshire.
