Pest Management

 Fallow Deer Crop
Fallow deer are among species whose numbers are increasing. Picture: Will Wood

In an impact survey, RFS members named the grey squirrel and the damage it causes to woodland trees as their number one challenge. We have called for government to make research and control a priority for forestry and the need for effective management is spelled out in our policies.

Deer numbers are increasing. They graze on young trees and their numbers in some parts of the country are making restocking, natural regneration and the planting of sustainable and resilient new woodland a challenge for many woodland owners. They have no natural predators in the UK and the RFS backs active management at a landscape level.
