Champions
The Tree Register of the British Isles (TROBI) maintains a database with records of over 126,000 notable, ancient or rare trees growing in the British Isles. It provides the definitive list of champion trees - the largest and tallest of each species. People have been measuring trees in the British Isles for several hundred years, particularly species which are large and long-lived.
The Tree Register was founded in 1988 by Alan Mitchell and Victoria Schilling. It depends heavily on a network of enthusiastic volunteer measurers and has a membership scheme. The details are on their website.
