Overseas Study Tour 2018 - Bavaria

STUDY TOUR OF THE AUSTRIAN TYROL AND BAVARIA

 23-28 SEPTEMBER, 2018

 IN ASSOCIATION WITH EGGER

 

The RFS and RSFS, with support from EGGER, are pleased to organise a five-day study tour of the Austrian Tyrol and Bavaria taking in all aspects of forestry, processing and manufacturing in the region. There is a huge amount to learn about Bavarian sivilcultural practices of relevance to UK forestry. We will be guided by leading practitioners of the finest examples of “close to nature” silviculture. This promises to be a highly educational as well as very enjoyable tour.

  

Itinerary

Sunday 23 September

PM: Coach transfer from Munich airport to St Johann, Austria. Overnight stay at the Hotel & Wirshaus Post. Welcome dinner

 

Monday 24 September

AM: Visit EGGER HQ and manufacturing plant at St Johann. EGGER was founded in 1961 in St Johann and remains a successful, growing family business with 18 plants across eight countries.

PM: Visit Binderholz glulam factory and saw mill at Fugen, Austria. Binderholz is a family owned business with several plants across Europe. It processes 6million trees through its plant at Fugen and exports large quantities of cross laminated timber to the UK. Transfer to Klosterhotel Ludwig der Bayer, Ettal.

Tuesday 25 September

AM: Visit exhibition “The myth of Bavaria – 400 years of sustainability of Bavarian forests.” Meet the manager of the Privatwaldgemeinschaft – private community forest association in Oberammagau. Take cable car to top of the mountain for lunch in the cable restaurant.

PM: Guided tour down the mountain looking at protection forestry in an alpine environment, deer control, conversion of Norway spruce to more mixed-species forest, high altitude cattle grazing, timber marketing. Private back-stage guided tour of the famous Oberammergau theatre. Return to Klosterhotel Ludwig der Bayer, Ettal.

 

Wednesday 26 September

Visit Bavarian State Forest near Ottoburern. The Bavarian State Forest manages over 800,000 ha, mainly spruce, pine and beech, and employ 2,700 staff. We will learn about the role and objectives of the state forest, organisation and skills development, management of pests and diseases and climate change adaptation. Travel on to overnight at Hotel NH Klosterle, Nordlingen.

Thursday 27 September

Travel to Nietheim, Baden Wurttemburg. Visit 5,000ha forest owned and managed by Blauwald GmbH and Co KG, a private forestry company with 17,000ha under management across Germany and Romania. See outstanding examples of continuous cover forest management of Norway spruce and beech from seedbed to maturity; learn about the application of the target tree system to accelerate the rotation cycle; and the introduction of alternative species (Douglas fir, Silver fir) as climate change adaptation strategy, and the role of grants and regulations. Guided tour of Neresheim Abbey. Return to Hotel NH Klosterle, Nordlingen.

 

Friday 28 September

Travel to Ingolstadt wherea we have been invited to visit the Bavarian royal forest, Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds, which is a rare privilege. Overview of forest management objectives, pests, disease and climate change management, approach to river and dry forest management and wildlife. Lunch at Koschinger Waldhaus. Return to Munich airport.

Price

The price of this trip is £775 per person assuming two people sharing a hotel room. The price includes bed, breakfast and lunch for five days/nights, three dinners, coach hire, guide book, tour administration, museum entry and cable car.  The price excludes flights to/from the UK and any hotel accommodation in the Munich area that may be required before or after the study tour. There is a wide selection of low cost flights from UK airports that arrive Munich on the first day and return to the UK on the last day. It is the delegate’s responsibility to book flights and any additional hotels. The Octoberfest is taking place in Munich at this time. There is a £100 single supplement. The price assumes all places on the tour are sold and the current £/Euro exchange rate. Prices may vary if these assumptions change.

 

How to apply

This tour is fully subscribed with a waiting list and no further applications can be considered. 

 

The RFS reserves the right to change the itinerary or cancel the tour for events beyond its reasonable control.
