What the lecturer said: The last two years have been a period of major change for Mike. After doing a variety of jobs, he decided to leave his employment working for a Funeral Director, and move from East Anglia to do the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Forestry and Arb.at Coleg Cambria at Llysfasi Campus He has made the most of the opportunity, and his work has improved tremendously since his return to full time education. He is always very keen and interested in all aspects of the course. His written work is always of good quality, and most units of the course will be completed to Distinction level.  He has achieved several Certificates of Competence for his practical work and he will also achieve the RFS Certificate in Arboriculture Theory qualification and hopes to achieve the full award in due course. During 2013, Mike completed a very successful period of work placement with Shropshire Wildlife Trust. This has all been achieved despite having to travel to College from his family home near Shrewsbury every day for the last 12 months of the course. He has always been very committed to the course, and has been an outstanding student who hopes to continue his education on the Forestry Degree programme at Bangor University next year.

What the college said: Coleg Cambria would like to thank the RFS and Silky Saws for the opportunity to nominate one of our students for this prestigious prize. It is very pleasing that the award is given for the Student showing most endeavour on the course. Students’ commitment and enthusiasm are not always recognised by some awards. We appreciate, too, the commitment that the RFS and Silky Saws are making to recognise such qualities in the forestry employees of the future.
