The RFS Silviculture Award recognises and encourages exemplary best practice in silviculture in commercial woodlands where quality timber production is a primary aim.

 

 Excellence Gold Award

  • Winner - Sotterley Estate

 

The judges said: “The rigour and attention to detail in the planning and implementation of all aspects of forestry have resulted in wonderful stands of trees throughout the estate, enhancing the landscape and increasing the conservation value.”             Eifbestofengland Silviculturewinners Crfs 120914 Pt

For Sotterley Estate, Miles Barnes the Estate Manager said: “We are delighted that our work on these 160-hectare woodlands has been recognised. Our primary aim is to produce the best possible quality oak timber while conserving the landscape and enhancing conditions favourable for native flora and fauna. The underlying requirement is that over any five-year period the woods must be profitable.”


 

Excellence Silver Award

  • Silver Whitbourne Estate, Worcestershire

Whitbourne Estate owner, Bill Evans, who will be hosting a combined meeting of the RFS Herefordshire and Worcestershire Divisions on the estate later this year, said: “We are lucky in the beautiful woods we have inherited, and to have our efforts looking after them appreciated by the judges means a lot. We were amazed to win the Regional Award last year and are thrilled now to be recognised nationally. It is a great spur to keeping the management going.”
